Food industry innovation strategies need to be based on food system technology and concerned not just with classic food technologies but also with enabling technologies (micro and nanoelectronics, nanotechnology, industrial biotechnology, advanced materials, photonics and advanced manufacturing technology) applied along the food supply chain, so as to produce food that satisfies the nutritional, personal and social needs and wants of all current and future communities.
